Sculpture Weekend Workshop - An introduction to Darjit

Sculpture Weekend Workshop - An introduction to Darjit

Create a feature for your garden, or an original base to mosaic. You'll find sculpting with Darjit a very addictive activity!

Darjit is the name of a fantastic sculpting medium that is made of 95% recycled materials including paper fibre, clay and rock finings. Combined with cement, it makes a strong and weatherproof material that can be moulded over a metal/mesh base to create virtually any shape you can think of. When dry it can be sanded, carved, drilled, painted or mosaiced to further enhance it, or just left natural.

This workshop is an introduction to the use of Darjit, and we will show you how to make your metal and mesh base and how to sculpt the Darjit onto it. You can come with a clear idea of what you wish to make, or be inspired at the time. You can also bring a base to sculpt over, such as an old chair or any other reasonably sturdy frame, or just use the metal and mesh that will be available during the workshop.

Your lunches
Gardening gloves for working with wire mesh.
A pair of wire cutters and/or tin snips and/or pliers if you have them - but we have plenty available if you don't.
A tarpaulin to protect the ground under your sculpture. This is essential!
If you have a base to work on bring it with you - eg: old chair, etc

Your finished sculpture will be very heavy and fragile when wet, so will not be able to be removed from where you make it for at least 1 day, preferabley 3 - 7 days while it dries.

We will be working inside so are protected from the weather, but with some nice messy materials, so wear old clothes or overalls.
